Executive Assistant / Veteran Service Officer (VSO)
Location: Decatur, Illinois
Position Type: Full-Time
Salary: $42,000 – $55,000 annually, based on experience, qualifications, and training potential.

Position Summary
The Veterans Assistance Commission of Macon County is seeking a motivated, organized,
and compassionate individual to serve as an Executive Assistant / Veteran Service Officer
(VSO).

This position provides executive administrative support to the Superintendent while
developing the knowledge and skills necessary to become an accredited Veteran Service
Officer. The successful candidate will assist Veterans, active-duty service members,
National Guard and Reserve members, surviving spouses, dependents, and caregivers in
obtaining County, State, Federal, and community benefits and services.
The selected candidate will complete required training through the National Association
of County Veteran Service Officers (NACVSO) and obtain accreditation through the U.S.
Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service to Veterans and their families.
  • Answer telephones, greet visitors, and schedule appointments.
  • Prepare correspondence, reports, and maintain confidential records.
  • Assist with grant administration and office operations.
  • Coordinate Veteran transportation scheduling.
  • Assist Veterans in preparing applications for Federal, State, and local benefits.
  • Learn Veterans laws, regulations, and VA claims procedures.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring Veterans’ claims.
  • Maintain professional relationships with community organizations and government agencies.
  • Attend required training and continuing education to obtain and maintain VA accreditation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

VSO Position

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and general computer applications.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain accreditation through NACVSO and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Military service with an Honorable or General (Under Honorable Conditions) discharge.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in administrative support, customer service, case management, or human services.
  • Experience working with Veterans or government agencies.

Veteran preference will be given where permitted by applicable law.
