WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (part-time)

Division: Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)/Family Case Management (FCM)

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) and has breastfed at least one baby; recent breastfeeding preferred (currently or within past 5 years). Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience. Must possess the ability to maintain positive working relationships with clients, co-workers, community partners, and the general public while protecting confidentiality at all times. Must have the ability to work with diverse community groups. Must have a dependable vehicle for use during work hours, valid Illinois Driver’s License, and appropriate auto insurance. Must be physically able to get in and out of a car many times per day in all types of weather and be able to adapt in a positive manner to various client living conditions (i.e. dirty, cramped).  Must be able to carry, pull, and manage a minimum of 30 pounds of equipment daily.

Pay Grade/Base Salary: Level 4/$15.29 per hour

Summary of Job Duties

Attends required breastfeeding training classes to become a Peer Counselor including Certified Lactation Counselor training or its equivalent. May complete faceto-face support visits during WIC/FCM clinic, office, home, or hospital settings.  Makes routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned. Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers within scope of practice. Utilizes texting, phone, and/or face-to-face visits to provide support outside usual working hours to new mothers. Completes documentation per protocol utilizing the WIC MIS data entry system. Provides referrals within scope of practice. Attends, assists, and/or conducts prenatal support group sessions, breastfeeding support groups, and infant feeding classes. Attends staff meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops/trainings as appropriate. Must participate in monthly Peer Counselor phone conference calls and may participate in the local and Regional Breastfeeding Task Force. Maintains supply inventory and completes orders and/or order requests for items including, but not limited to: breast pumps, pump kits, and educational materials. Completes cleaning of breast pumps. May assist with development of informational materials for use in outreach activities. Collaborates with WIC team to promote breastfeeding through special projects and duties. Assists with job shadowing/training for all new staff hired to perform the same job description in whole or in part, as well as assists with dietetic and nursing internship job shadowing.
